Creativity has become the mainstream buzzword right around when the all-in-one apple devices hit the markets. The thought of simplistically using a device to make calls, listen to music and also be able to be a user of such a creative undertaking seemed to be (and continues to be) the main reason why people want to have their bite of an extraordinarily creative product.
“Creativity is just connecting things. When you ask creative people how they did something, they feel a little guilty because they didn’t really do it, they just saw something. It seemed obvious to them after a while. That’s because they were able to connect experiences they’ve had and synthesize new things. And the reason they were able to do that was that they’ve had more experiences or they have thought more about their experiences than other people. Unfortunately, that’s too rare a commodity. A lot of people in our industry haven’t had very diverse experiences. So they don’t have enough dots to connect, and they end up with very linear solutions without a broad perspective on the problem. The broader one’s understanding of the human experience, the better design we will have.”Regarded as the Guru of Creative design – Steve Jobs
The notion that creative people are just born, and rarely made seems to hold a lot of traction even today. While creative can be an innate trait, there is absolutely no question that we can improve our problem-solving abilities and be more creative versions of ourselves.
A one remedy to better our creativity doesn’t exist, but these steps can boost your creativity in varying strengths:
The surest way to be aware of newer ideas is to be infinitely curious about anything (and just about everything). Varying viewpoints that people bring on a particular topic can only add to our repertoire of problem-solving skills and this is the basis of collaboration breeds creativity. When all people think alike, nobody is actually thinking is an adage that can form your mantra for creative endeavours. When you get hooked to your creative process, you encounter the greatest bliss of being able to lose a sense of time. When you do something that pleases you, you absolutely lose yourself.
Setting right the entire biochemistry of the nervous system, meditation calms an agitated mind to relax for longer spans of time when continued over months and years. Calmness increases cognition and coherence, both of which is manure to increase our creativity.
Dopamine and Creativity
Dopamine is the master chemical responsible for creative thought-processes. In fact, many diseases with excess dopamine like schizophrenia are often people who lose touch with reality and is replaced by fantasies and delusional thought processes. Dopamine can be increased in our body by maintaining a balanced diet rich in micronutrients and by the use of Nootropics such as N-Acetyl Tyrosine (NALT) and also a traditional herbal tonic – Mucuna Pruriens. Both these nootropics help increase the dopamine levels in our body and are powerful antioxidants as well.
Go for a walk or Exercise and wear the color blue
Being able to not focus on anything for even short spans of time can give your brain the proverbial “Refresh” hit that can help solve our creative blocks. Taking a walk is most necessary when you can relax your psychological and bodily systems to be at harmony and release muscle tension. It is very rare that creative insights come to you when you are stressed or agitated. You’re just out of frequency with the mind and body when your not relaxed. Walking, Jogging and listening to music can help bring out the best in you. A recent study also proposed increased viewing of color blue because it jogs our neurons and puts us into a “Creative Haze”.
The use of Psychedelic Substances
LSD, Marijuana and other “Drugs” remain a touchy topic because of their illicit (and illegal) nature almost globally. Many users of these drugs swear by the ability to coherently and calmly solve your problems or at least be able to think right with these drugs. LSD has been scientifically researched to increase creativity multifold when taken in the right dosages.
